The Japanses raisin tree is a hardy fruit tree native to much of Eastern Asia. The fragrant, sweet and edible fruit is tasty eaten cooked or raw. The fruits when dried - resembling the look and taste of raisins, emerge after pollination of the small cream coloured hermaphroditic flowers at the height of summer. An extract of the seeds and young leaves can be used as a substitute for honey. This tree will reach a height of 10m fully grown.
The tree prefer to grow in a sunny position on moist sandy or loamy soils.
Scarify seeds then soak in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow indoors in lighlty compacted soil at a depth of 1/2 to 1 cm, water well. Transplant to a sunny or part shade position.
